Saturday 3 April the AD newspaper had an extensive feature article about the architecture of the gallery and home of Jan and Anneke van Nouhuys. The design by Gerard Rijnsdorp had struck the journalist when he looked at Gerard's website, and he decided to write an article about the gallery/home, built in 2004.
He opens : "The building looks as if it belongs to the defensewalls of the town quite naturally. The very striking feature from the side of the street are the walls with only a few long and narrow windows. It makes one curious to know what is inside. 'This is exactly what happens,' Van Nouhuys says. 'People do look through, their noses against the glass.'
Entering the building is an experience, just as Van Nouhuys and the architect wanted it to be.
'It is the same experience one has when visiting a church. You step through a solid door into a dark area, and through another door again you enter into a high, spacious place full of colour and light where the real thing happens. In a very minor way we mimicked this idea by having a low ceiling at the entrance. After a few metres the room enfolds itself and is full of light.' That light comes from a so-called lightstreet over the complete length of the ceiling and a very high reaching window with a beautiful view of the old town with the main church in the background."
