With the in Dutch playful use of words as heading : Een kwab staaltje, an article appeared in De Volkskrant of 25th June 2018 about the auricular style used by the Van Vianens early 17th century.
Much attention goes to the jug that Adam van Vianen made in 1614. This amazing piece is the central object in the Rijksmuseum exhibition entitled : Kwab. Dutch design in de eeuw van Rembrandt. (Auricular style. Dutch design in the age of Rembrandt)
This very Dutch style is explained with humor. The writer has based the article on information by Reinier Baarsen, who made the exhibition, Joosje van Bennekom and Jan van Nouhuys.
The famous jug by Adam van Vianen is the highlight of the exhibition and rightly so, as from the moment it appeared on the scene in Amsterdam it was a hit. It was an absolute novelty. It defied all the rules a jug had to meet : symetry, a certain orderly concept - everything. More auricular than this auricular jug you won't get. ("Kwabbiger dan de kwabkan bestond niet")
It inspired auricular work in other discilines, like painting and cabinetmaking. 130 objects in the 'kwab style' have been selected for the exhibition.
